5-minute local SEO audit checklist

Most business owners think an SEO audit means hiring an expert, paying hundreds of dollars, and waiting weeks for a report you can barely understand. Here's the truth: you can catch 80% of common SEO issues with five simple checks that take about a minute each.

Grab your phone. Let's do this right now.

Check #1: Google Yourself (60 seconds)

Open an incognito window and search for your business name. What do you see?

What to look for:

  • • Does your Google Business Profile show up on the right side?
  • • Are your hours, phone number, and address correct?
  • • Do you have recent photos (not from 2022)?

Red flag: If your competitor shows up before you do when someone searches your exact name, you have a serious problem.

Check #2: The NAP Consistency Test (60 seconds)

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Search your business on Google, then check Yelp, Facebook, and Apple Maps. Is the information exactly the same everywhere?

68%

of businesses have NAP inconsistencies

#1

reason AI skips businesses

Even small differences matter. "123 Main St" vs "123 Main Street" vs "123 Main St." — to AI, these can look like different businesses.

Check #3: Your Review Health (60 seconds)

Pull up your Google reviews. Count how many you've gotten in the last 90 days. Now check your star rating.

Healthy review profile:

  • • At least 3-5 reviews in the past month
  • • 4.0+ star average
  • • Mix of detailed and short reviews
  • • Owner replies to both positive and negative reviews

Red flag: Your last review is from 6+ months ago, or you have fewer than 10 total reviews.

Check #4: Mobile Speed Test (60 seconds)

Open your website on your phone. Count to three. Did it load? If you had to wait, your customers aren't waiting either.

Google's data shows that 53% of mobile visitors leave a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. And slow sites get penalized in both Google rankings and AI recommendations.

Check #5: The AI Recommendation Test (60 seconds)

This is the one most people skip — and it might be the most important. Open ChatGPT (or Perplexity, or Google's AI) and type: "best [your service] in [your city]."

Did you show up? If not, you're invisible to the growing number of people who use AI to find local businesses.

Your Score

Give yourself a point for each check where you passed:

  • 5/5: You're ahead of 90% of local businesses. Keep it up.
  • 3-4/5: Solid foundation with room to improve. Focus on the gaps.
  • 1-2/5: You're likely losing customers to competitors who have these basics covered.

The good news? Every one of these issues is fixable. And fixing them doesn't require a big budget — just a little time and attention to your online presence.
