Zero-Click Searches Are Killing Your Traffic — Here's How to Win Anyway
Google answers the question before anyone clicks. So how do you compete?

February 2026
Picture this: someone Googles "best pizza near me." Google shows a map, three business names, star ratings, hours, and a phone number. The person taps "call" — and never visits a single website. That's a zero-click search, and it now accounts for 60% of all Google searches.
Your website traffic isn't declining because your SEO is bad. It's declining because Google is answering questions before anyone needs to click.
What Exactly Is a Zero-Click Search?
A zero-click search is any search where the user gets their answer directly on the results page — through featured snippets, knowledge panels, AI Overviews, map packs, or instant answers. No click to any website required.
60%
of searches are zero-click
80%
of local searches are zero-click
For local businesses, it's even worse: roughly 80% of local searches end without a website click. People call directly, get directions, or read reviews — all without ever seeing your homepage.
Google AI Overviews Made It Worse
Google's AI Overviews (formerly SGE) now generate a paragraph-length answer at the top of search results. For a query like "best emergency plumber in Austin," Google's AI might write: "Based on reviews, XYZ Plumbing is highly rated for emergency service in Austin, with 24/7 availability and average response times under 30 minutes."
If that's not your business, the customer probably won't scroll further. The AI did the deciding for them.
"The best SEO strategy in 2026 isn't getting people to your website. It's making sure the answer is you — wherever the answer shows up."
How to Win in a Zero-Click World
You can't stop zero-click searches. But you can make sure your business is the one showing up in those instant answers. Here's how:
- 1.Optimize your Google Business Profile. This is your new homepage. Complete every field, add photos weekly, respond to every review, and post updates regularly.
- 2.Win the map pack. The local 3-pack is the biggest source of zero-click conversions. Focus on proximity, relevance, and prominence (reviews + citations).
- 3.Earn the AI Overview mention. Structure your content to directly answer common questions. Use FAQ schema. Be the source the AI wants to cite.
- 4.Make the click unnecessary — but on your terms. Put your phone number, hours, and address everywhere. If they're going to call without clicking, make sure the number they find is yours.
Are you showing up in zero-click results? Or are your competitors taking those calls?
Check Your AI VisibilityThe old playbook was: rank on page one, get clicks, convert visitors. The new playbook is: be the answer. Whether that answer appears on Google, in ChatGPT, or in an AI Overview — the business that shows up first wins.
